More than 6,000 Manitoba Hydro customers along the east side of Lake Winnipeg’s southern basin are without power Monday morning because of wildlife.

People in the Sagkeeng First Nation area and in Manitoba cottage country around Grand Marais, south and north of Grand Beach, are affected by the outage. Grand Marais is more than 80 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg in the rural municipality of St. Clements.

Manitoba Hydro first tweeted about the outage before 6 a.m.

Manitoba Hydro’s online outage map shows more than 6,000 customers from Beaconia to Wanasing Beach affected. Another 328 customers living in Sagkeeng are also without power Monday morning.

Hydro had originally estimated the power would be restored by 8:30 a.m.

The estimate is now 9:30 a.m.
