The major crimes unit of the Winnipeg Police Service is now investigating the assault of a man found lying in the middle of Sherbrook Street Wednesday morning.

Winnipeg police were called about a disturbance on Sherbrook Street between Sargent and Cumberland avenues around 8:45 a.m., Const. Rob Carver said.

The injured man was found on the road and taken to hospital in critical condition, but he’s now in stable condition.

Police wouldn’t provide information Wednesday about the type of injuries he had, but said Thursday that he’d been assaulted.

A sweatshirt and a single shoe were on the street behind police tape Wednesday. Police blocked off traffic on Sherbrook Street at Sargent for most of Wednesday morning and into the early afternoon.
