Police say six young people attempted to escape from the Agassiz Youth Centre in Portage la Prairie, Man., on Friday evening and five were successful, albeit briefly.
RCMP were called to the youth correctional facility at about 6:30 p.m. that evening and were told that the teenagers managed to escape under the fence and run away, according to a news release issued on Monday.
The sixth teenager was caught before he could crawl under the fence.
The escaped youth were seen running away from the facility into an open field.
RCMP immediately worked to contain the area using a drone and police dogs.
The teenagers were arrested within a “very short time period,” according to the release.
The five escapees, all males between the ages of 15 and 18, were charged with escaping lawful custody and prison breach.
The RCMP are still investigating.
